61. To feed others with the intention of showing off is a grave sin.
Thus one should feed others with sincerity and for the pleasure of Allāh. Consequently, feeding only a little will result in immense reward. In contrast, feeding on a large scale with the intention of conceit or showing off will result in incurring the wrath of Allāh.
Umar bin Khattab (r.a.) narrates that the Messenger of Allāh (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.” (Bukhārī)
Abū Hurayrah (r.a.) narrates that the Messenger of Allāh (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Allāh does not look at your appearance or wealth but looks at your heart and actions.” (Muslim)
Abū Umamah Bāhilī (r.a.) narrates that the the Messenger of Allāh (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Verily Allāh accepts only those deeds which are done solely for the pleasure of Allāh. (Nasaī)
62. Respect every type of food, especially bread.
Many narrations have specifically highlighted respecting bread.
From the etiquette of bread is that, if bread is presented before the soup, one should start eating the bread until the soup arrives; as the bread is a primary food and the soup secondary.
63. It is disliked to cut bread with a knife unnecessarily. However, if there is a genuine need, it is permissible without any dislike.
64. It is against etiquette to place utensils or dishes on bread as the status of bread is superior.
