Today you will learn about the best man that ever lived. We already know that the prophets were the best from all the people. But our Prophet Muhammad (ṣallāllāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) was the best from all the prophets. He was the most special person chosen by Allah.
Our Prophet Muhammad (ṣallāllāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) is the best and his story is also the best from all the prophets! By reading his story, we will learn how the best person ever lived!
The Well of Zamzam
Before we start the story of our Prophet Muhammad (ṣallāllāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam), we should learn about the place he was born and what the world was like at that time. Our Prophet Muhammad (ṣallāllāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) was going to born in Makkah. So we will learn about what Makkah was like before.
The People of Jurhum
Once upon a time, Makkah was an empty desert. There were no trees or plants. There wasn’t even water. If you remember Allah commanded Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi s-salām) to take his wife Ḥājar (raḍiyallahu ʿanhā) and son Ismāʿīl to Makkah. It was in Makkah where Allah gave Ismāʿīl (ʿalayhi s-salām) and Ḥājar (raḍiyallahu ʿanhā) the well of Zamzam. They were both alone for some time, then the people of Jurhum came and started to live there.
After Ismāʿīl (ʿalayhi s-salām) passed away, his children and the people of Jurhum had an argument. The people of Jurhum became in charge of Makkah. They started to hurt the people, so the children of Ismāʿīl (ʿalayhi s-salām) moved a little outside Makkah to stay away from them.
The people of Jurhum carried on hurting people until everyone stood up against them. Everyone became angry with them and forced them to leave Makkah. Before they left Makkah, they took all the precious things from inside Ka’bah and hid them in the well of Zamzam. They then hid the well of Zamzam so no one could tell where the well had been.
When the children of Ismāʿīl (ʿalayhi s-salām) moved back into Makkah, they did not know where the well was. It was now lost.
The Leader of Makkah and the Dream
After many years, a big family called the Quraysh started living in Makkah. The leader of the Quraysh was a man called Abdul Muṭṭalib. He was the leader of Makkah. One day, he was sleeping near the Ka’bah, when someone came to him in his dream and said to him, “Dig up Barrah.”
Abdul Muṭṭalib asked the person, “What is Barrah?” but the person went away without answering.
The next day, Abdul Muṭṭalib was sleeping in the same place and the same person came in his dream and said, “Dig up Madhnunah.”
Abdul Muṭṭalib asked the person, “What is Madhnunah?” but the person went away without answering.
The third day, Abdul Muṭṭalib was sleeping in the same place and the same person came in his dream and said, “Dig up Ṭībah.”
Abdul Muṭṭalib asked the person, “What is Ṭībah?” but the person went away without answering.
The Well of Zamzam
On the fourth day, Abdul Muṭṭalib was sleeping in the same place and the same person came in his dream and said, “Dig up Zamzam”.
Abdul Muṭṭalib asked the person, “What is Zamzam?” The person said, “It is water which never finishes or becomes less. It is water from which lots and lots of people will drink when they come to Makkah.”
The person showed Abdul Muṭṭalib some signs of where to start digging. Abdul Muṭṭalib knew the dream was real. Abdul Muṭṭalib told the Quraysh about his dream but they did not believe him. But Abdul Muṭṭalib did not care about what they thought. He took his son Harith to the place in the dream and started digging. Abdul Muṭṭalib would dig and his son would put the soild on the side.
After three days of digging, Abdul Muṭṭalib finally saw the well. He was so happy, he shouted, “Allahu Akbar! This is the well of Ismāʿīl (ʿalayhi s-salām).
Some people became jealous of Abdul Muṭṭalib because he found the well. They would come every day and ruin the well. When Abdul Muṭṭalib saw this happening, he made dua to Allah and the bad people stopped.
This was the story of the Well of Zamzam which happened before our Prophet Muhammad (ṣallāllāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) was born. Even until today that same water is still coming out in Makkah! Millions of people that go Makkah and Madinah drink that water. They bring water back home for their family. Zamzam is a miracle of Allah.
The water of Zamzam is very special. If we make a duʿā and ask Allah for something and then drink Zamzam water, Allah will give us that thing! So next time you’re about to drink Zamzam, make sure you ask Allah for whatever you want.
