According to the Ḥanafī’s, it is better to perform tarāwīḥ in sets of 2 rakaʿāt’s (units) with salām at the completion of every 2 rakaʿāt’s (units).
If 4 rakaʿāt’s (units) are performed with one salām, while doing qa’dah (sitting) in the second rakaʿāt (unit), this will be also permissible according to the Ḥanafī’s.
If one performs more than 4 rakaʿāt’s (units), like 6, 8 or 10 with one salām, while doing while doing qa’dah (sitting) in every second rakaʿāt (unit), then according to the Ḥanafī’s, all these rakaʿāt’s (units) will be considered to be that of tarāwīḥ, however this is not recommended; rather, makrūh (disliked) as it opposes established and conventional method.
According to the Mālikī’s, it is mustaḥabb (recommended) to make salām at every 2 rakaʿāt’s (units). Performing more than 2 rakaʿāt’s (units) is not recommended.
And the Shafīʿīs have ruled that performing 4 or more rakaʿāt’s (units) with one salām will not be considered as tarāwīḥ.
