Today you will learn about the life of one of the best people that ever lived. This was a man sent by Allāh. You will learn why they were sent and what lessons we can learn from their lives. They were known as the Prophets of Allāh.
The Story of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām)
The family of Yaʿqūb (ʿalayhi s-salām) and Yūsuf (ʿalayhi s-salām) stayed in Egypt.
At that time, the ruler of Egypt did not like the family of Yaʿqūb (ʿalayhi s-salām) and Yūsuf (ʿalayhi s-salām). The leader of Egypt was a very evil king. He thought that he was Allah and he told everyone to worship him. His name was Fir’awn.
The Special Child
One day, some people came to Fir’awn and told him that a child would be born in the family of Yaʿqūb (ʿalayhi s-salām) who will destroy his kingdom.
When Fir’awn heard of this he got very angry and started killing all the boys who would be born in the family of Yaʿqūb (ʿalayhi s-salām).
The Mother of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām)
When the mother of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) heard about this, she became very worried and scared. Allah wanted to protect baby Mūsā, so He told her to put baby Mūsā in a basket. He then told her to put the basket in the river.
She was of course very scared to do this, but Allah made her heart strong.
The King’s Palace
That same day, Fir’awn and his wife, Āsiyah, were walking outside the palace. They suddenly saw basket floating towards them. They took the basket and opened it. To their surprise, there was a baby boy inside.
Fir’awn was scared that the boy might be the one people were warning him about. He quickly ordered his officers to kill the boy.
His wife Āsiyah begged Fir’awn not kill him. She wanted to keep the baby and make him a son.
The Sister of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām)
The sister of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was secretly following the basket. She wanted to see where the basket finally went.
She saw that Fir’awn had taken the baby. When the baby became hungry, all women in the palace tried to give Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) milk to drink. But he would not drink any milk. So the sister of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) went to the palace and told them that she knew a lady who will be able to give this baby milk.
The Mother of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām)
The people of the palace quickly called Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām)’s mother. When she gave Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) milk, he started drinking it straight away.
Fir’awn told her to keep Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) for a few years until he could start eating food.
Look how Allah returned Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) back to his mother. Sometimes we have to trust Allah. We might think that something is bad, but later on it might turn out to be good. We should always remember that Allah is the Most-Wise. He knows about everything. He knows what is good for us and what is bad for us.
Back to the Palace
After a few years, Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) grew up and started eating food. It was time to go back to the palace. When he went back, he saw how badly his people were treated. They would make his people do all the hard work.
The Fight
One day, Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was walking in the market. He saw a man from his family fighting someone from the king’s family. The man from his family asked Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) for help. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was very strong. He went to help the person and hit the other person so hard that he died.
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was very upset. He only wanted to help the person from his family. He did not want to kill the other person.
Everyone found out what had happened. Everyone knew that a person had been killed from the king’s people.
Another Fight
The next day, Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) saw the same person from his family fighting again. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) realised that he was the person who started all the fights.
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) went to stop them fighting. The person who was starting the fights was scared that Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) will get angry at him. So he started shouting loudly, “Will you kill me like you killed the person yesterday?”
Everyone heard the man say this. Everyone found out that it was Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) who killed the man. Soon, the news had reached Fir’awn’s palace that Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) killed the man.
Leaving Egypt
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) left Egypt. He was scared that Fir’awn would punish him and kill him. He arrived in a place called Madyan.
When he entered, he saw a group of people giving water to their animals. On the side, there were two women who were waiting. They look worried. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) went to them and asked what was the matter? They said, “Our father is an old man. We cannot water the animals until all these men go.”
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) watered their animals for them and went away.
Another Prophet
One of the women came back to Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām). She said that her father was calling him so that he could reward him for watering the animals.
Her father was also a Prophet. His name was Shuʿayb (ʿalayhi s-salām). He told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) not to be scared and that he was safe now.
One of the daughters told her father to hire Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) because he was strong and trustworthy. He could help out in the family. Shuʿayb (ʿalayhi s-salām) saw that Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was a very good man. He asked Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to marry one of his daughters.
Back to Egypt
Many years later, Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) decided to go back to Egypt with his family.
On the way, they got lost. It was cold and dark. Suddenly, they saw a fire. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) told his family to stay there so he could go and see what it was?
When Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) went, he heard a voice saying, “O Musa! I am your Lord.”
Allah spoke to Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) and told him that he has been chosen to be a Prophet.
Two Miracles
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) carried a stick with him. He was ordered to throw it on the ground. When he did that, the stick turned into a snake! Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) became scared but Allah told him not to worry.
Then Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was told to put his hand under his arm. When he did, his hand started to shine.
These were two miracles Allah gave Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām). In the time of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) everyone would do magic. So Allah gave Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) a miracle which no magician could beat.
Calling the People Towards Allah
Allah ordered Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to call the people towards Allah. The people of Fir’awn had become very bad. They would not worship Allah and hurt other people.
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) was scared that the people might kill him because he had killed one of their people. He told Allah about this and Allah told him not to worry.
Going to Fir’awn
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) wanted to go to Fir’awn to call him towards Allah and what was good. He asked Allah if he could take his brother Hārūn along with him as a helper. Allah let Hārūn go along with Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām).
When Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) arrived at the palace, he was now a Prophet. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) told Fir’awn about Allah. He told him how powerful Allah is.
The Challenge
When Fir’awn saw the stick changing into a snake, he said that it was magic. He challenged Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to try to beat all his magicians. Fir’awn called all the best magicians of Egypt to compete with Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām). Fir’awn was sure that the magicians would win.
The day of the challenge had come. Everyone gathered to see who would win. Fir’awn promised the magicians a big reward if they won.
Snakes!
The magicians asked Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) if they should go first or if he wanted to go first? Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) told them to go first.
The magicians threw their ropes and they turned into small snakes. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) became a little worried. Allah told him not to worry because He would help him.
This was just magic. Allah had given Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) a miracle. A miracle is stronger than magic.
The time for Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to throw his stick came. He threw his stick and it turned into a huge snake which ate all the small snakes up. The small snakes were fake. People looking thought they were snakes but really they weren’t.
The Magicians
When the magicians saw what had happened, they knew that this was not magic. It was something special from Allah. They all went into prostration and said, “We believe in the Lord of Mūsā and Hārūn.”
When Fir’awn saw this, he was very angry. He told the magicians that he would punish them by cutting of their arms and legs.
Allah protected Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) and showed the people the power of Allah.
Fir’awn was very angry, so he started to treat the people of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) even worse.
Explaining to Fir’awn
Allah told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to carry on trying to call Fir’awn towards good. Allah told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to speak kindly to Fir’awn, even though he was so evil.
We learn that no matter how bad someone is we should always speak kindly. Who could be worse than Fir’awn. But Allah still told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to speak kindly to him.
The Punishments
Even after explaining so much to Fir’awn, he still did not listen. Allah sent down different types of punishments so Fir’awn could realise and become good again. Allah sent down frogs, locusts, lice and even a flood. Even after all these punishments, Fir’awn carried on how he was.
When a punishment would come, the people would beg Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to tell Allah to take it away. They would promise they would become good and start believing in Allah. They would promise that they would stop hurting people.
But this was all lies. Whenever Allah would take the punishment away, they would become bad again.
Saving His People
Allah then told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to take his people away from Fir’awn. Allah wanted to save his people from the evil of Fir’awn. Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) took all of his people with him.
When Fir’awn found out that they had all ran away, he sent his army to find them.
After a while, Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) and his people reached a dead end! There was nowhere to go! There was a sea in front of them and a huge army behind them. They could hear the army running behind them!
All the people started saying and complaining, “We have been caught.”
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) said, “Never! Allah is with me and He shall help me.”
The Stick
Allah told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to hit his stick on the water. When Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) hit his stick, the water suddenly made twelve pathways for each family.
Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) and the twelve families safely got to the other side.
When Fir’awn saw what had happened to the sea, he told everyone, “Look how the water has opened up for me.” He went inside the water with his whole army trying to catch Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām).
When Fir’awn and his army reached the middle of the sea, Allah told the water to crash down on them. The water came crashing down and Fir’awn and his army all drowned.
Allah saved Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) and his people from the evil of Fir’awn.
Lessons from the Story of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām)
We must remember some very important lessons from the story of Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām):
We learn that sometimes we have to trust Allah. We might think that something is bad, but later on it might turn out to be good. We should always remember that Allah is the Most-Wise. He knows about everything. He knows what is good for us and what is bad for us. Look how Allah returned Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) back to his mother.
We learn that no matter how bad someone is we should always speak kindly. Who could be worse than Fir’awn. But Allah still told Mūsā (ʿalayhi s-salām) to speak kindly to him.
