Never Tasted the Food

Shaykh-ul-Ḥadīth Haḍrat Mawlānā Muḥammad Zakariyya Kandelwhī relates that Mawlānā Ẓuhūr al-Ḥaq, was the supervisor of the kitchen and a teacher at the world renowned Islamic institute, Maẓāhir al-‘Ulūm. He remained practically in the kitchen for the entire day. When the need arose for the food to be tasted for the amount of salt etc., he would have one of the students to taste the food but he himself never tasted it. And whenever he found a little spare time, he used to go home to eat. Shaykh-ul-Ḥadīth further says that, in similar vein, I have not seen any of the teachers even eating one morsel from the food of the madrasāh. Furthermore, in spite of being very cautious and mindful in such matters, Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā Khalīl Ahmad Saharānpūrī, upon leaving for Arabian Peninsula with the intention to settle there permanently, took one added precaution. He granted his own personal library as an endowment to the madrasāh, saying that he did not know, how many of the madrasāh’s rights he violated and are thereby still due upon him.
