Racing with One’s Spouse

Ḥakīm al-Ummat Mawlānā Ashraf ʿĀlī Thānwī was once visiting a village a distance away from his hometown Thanabhawan to partake in a meal. His wife was also accompanying him. It was a walk through the woods and they were both alone.

When they reached the middle of the jungle the thought crossed his mind that through the sheer grace of Allah I have had the ability to practice upon many sunnats of Rasūlullāh ﷺ. Nevertheless, I haven’t had the opportunity of fulfilling the sunnah of racing with ones wife which is narrated by Aisha (r.a) that Rasūlullāh ﷺ, said to her: Come I will race you so I raced with him and I won. After I became heavier he raced me and he won, so he laughed and said this one for that one. (Abū-Dāwūd)

Ḥakīm al-Ummat Mawlānā Ashraf ʿĀlī Thānwī thought that today is the perfect opportunity to practice upon this sunnah. Hence, he ran with his wife to implement this sunnah also.

It is apparent that he did not have any desire to run (due to his old age) but because he wanted to act upon this sunnah, he decided to run. This was his zeal and passion for practicing upon the sunnah.
